Britain’s Bright Ideas: Winner Announced!

Britain’s Brightest Idea accolade goes to Tamworth man

Mike Biddell, 61, of Tamworth has been crowned winner of Britain’s Bright Ideas. His amazing energy saving contraption – air conditioned bed sheets – wowed the judges with its originality, simplicity and genuine workability.

Mike, who by day is a retired physicist and enthusiastic garden shed inventor came up with the idea of bed sheets which blow chilled air into the bed space after noting how much energy is wasted by air conditioning whole houses around the world

Launched by legendary scientist Professor Heinz Wolff, Britain’s Bright Ideas was npower’s search for great gizmos, gadgets or smart ideas to make energy efficiency easier for all of us.

Mike’s winning idea beat off competition from a bicycle powered USB charger, an infra-red hairdryer and floating island cities.

Mike said of his successful invention, ‘I’m thrilled to have come up with Britain’s Brightest Idea! I’ve always wanted to transform one of my little ideas into a full-blown invention so it’s great to have the support of some real experts. Maybe in ten years everyone will be using my air-conditioned bed sheets – but I suppose we need a heatwave in Britain first!

To celebrate his success, a Wallace & Gromit-style sketch of Mike’s invention has been unveiled as the latest exhibit at London’s Science Museum.
